Common Thermoplastic Used in Injection Molding
Jun 08, 2020

Thermoplastic injection molding is the most common method to manufacture parts. This kind of material is polymer that can be molten by heating and solidified by cooling again and again. It’s important to chose resonable material when injection molding. There are some kinds of thermoplastic that are common used to create products, which are as follows:

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

ABS is an opaque thermoplastic and amorphous polymer. It is a terpolymer which is consist of Acrylonitrile, Butadiene, and Styrene. In our daily life, there are many items that is lightweight and portable are moled by ABS.

Why is ABS popular among in injection molding? The advantage of ABS is that a variety of modifications can be made to improve impact resistance, toughness, and heat resistance, which are the most important mechanical properties of ABS . The impact resistance can be amplified by increasing the proportions of polybutadiene. Molding at a high temperature can improve the gloss and heat resistance of the product while molding at a low temperature is where the highest impact resistance and strength are obtained.

Polycarbonat (PC)

PC plastic are a naturally transparent amorphous thermoplastic. They are widely used to produce a variety of products, which are required impact resistance and transparency are a requirement (ex: bullet-proof glass). Unlike most thermoplastics, PC has very good heat resistance and can be combined with flame resistance materials without significant material degradation. PC plastics are engineering plastics in that they are typically used for producing more capable, robust products.

Polyamide (Nylon)

Nylon is a strong, stiff engineering plastic with outstanding electrical properties, toughness, wear resistance and chemical resistance. It is frequently used to replace metal bearings and bushings often eliminating the need for external lubrication. Other benefits include a reduction in part weight, less operating noise, and decreased wear on mating parts. This material produces plastic parts used in many industries such as: industrial joint parts, industrial cover part and sports equipment, etc.
